SCAD: 2D Animation
My 2D animation class was taught by Troy Gustafson, a former animator for Disney. He worked on movies such as The Lion King, Mulan, Lilo & Stitch, Pocahontas, and Brother Bear. It was amazing learning from him! On Monday, the first day of class, he taught us about the 12 principles of animation and we started designing characters and storyboards. On Tuesday, after we got our designs approved, we started animating. We had approximately 6 hours to animate using the traditional method of tracing over a light table. My original design was a cat yawning. On Thursday, with only one hour left to animate, I realized I wouldn't have enough time to close the cat's mouth. So, I figured the only plausible thing to do would be to open it even wider! I turned him into a sort of demon cat and I'm so happy with the direction it turned! I ended with a grand total of 66 individual frames, not including the title. It was Troy's idea, after he had seen it, to close the cat's mouth by playing the frames back in reverse. This was my first time animating something and I think it turned out great for a beginner! Everyone's animations were presented on a projector during the student exhibit on Friday night.
