SCAD ILLU 100 : Intro to Illustration

This past spring quarter I took the intro class to my major (yes even though I have already taken an illustration course). We talked a lot about the business side of being a freelance illustrator including how to communicate with clients, produce ideas, and make revisions. For each project we were allowed to use whatever medium we wanted.

I'm not going to be showing as much preliminary work as I have in the past just because I want to be selfish and keep my ideas to myself.

The first project was to create a cover for The New Yorker magazine. We were told to look at topics we could make our cover about and I chose deforestation. This was my first time doing a whole project on Adobe Illustrator and I'm quite happy with it being my first one!

The second project was creating a narrative illustration for an already existing story. Though we could use any media, our palette was limited to black and white. The story I looked at was The Water-Babies: A Fairy Tale for a Land Baby by Charles Kingsley. I used india ink, black colored pencil, and white gel pen.

The third project was to create a set of three posters for an event or social/political stance. I created a set of fake tour posters for one of my favorite bands, The Front Bottoms. I got the idea for the devil mask from a song titled "I swear to God the Devil made me do it." Their recent albums have had mega summer/beach vibes so I went with that theme. I used watercolor, colored pencil, and Adobe Photoshop.

The fourth project was creating 4 coordinating characters. You had to have an idea about their story including the general location, time period, genre, etc. I came up with an idea that I want to explore further and will surely post more about, but for now, just think about wizards with a sort of Cartoon-Network-esque vibe. I used Micron pens and Photoshop.

The fifth and final project was to take these four characters and put them in a scene. It didn't have to be a physical place like I did, it could have been a graphic back drop showing off the characters. I took this as an opportunity to practice back grounds as I tend to avoid those. The version I have here is not going to be the final version. I was running low on time during finals week and I skipped over some of the details I want to add, such as a wood grain on the table and scribbling titles onto the books and jar labels. I plan on finishing that up really soon.
